The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is a 2024 French adventure film directed by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière, adapting Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel. On the day of his wedding, sailor Edmond Dantès (Pierre Niney) is falsely accused of treason by rivals Fernand de Morcerf (Bastien Bouillon) and prosecutor Gérard de Villefort (Laurent Lafitte) and imprisoned without trial in the Château d'If. After fourteen years, and with the guidance of a fellow prisoner, the Abbé Faria (Pierfrancesco Favino), Dantès escapes, claims a hidden fortune, and returns to Paris as the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo to destroy the men who ruined him. Breguet pocket watch

Worn by Pierre Niney as Edmond Dantès. Dantès carries a Breguet pocket watch, a piece the production had specially recreated for filming rather than an antique original; a separate, authentic Breguet marine chronometer appears on set in shipowner Morrel's office. Dumas's own novel ties the Breguet name to the story more than once, echoing the 1844 novel's own Breguet pocket watch appearance: elsewhere in the book, the Roman innkeeper Signor Pastrini produces "a magnificent Bréguet, bearing the name of its maker, of Parisian manufacture, and a count's coronet" to settle a claim about his own history. Breguet's reputation for precision was already a byword for nineteenth-century French luxury by the time Dumas and contemporaries such as Balzac, Pushkin, and Stendhal each wrote the name into their fiction.
