Andrew V. McLaglen's World War II drama for United Artists, adapted from the 1966 book by Robert H. Adleman and George Walton. In 1942, William Holden plays Lt. Col. Robert T. Frederick, the officer tasked with assembling and training a joint American-Canadian commando unit, the 1st Special Service Force, out of misfits and undisciplined volunteers, forging them into the force the Germans nicknamed "the Devil's Brigade" after its raids in Italy.
