Tom and Jerry is the cat-and-mouse cartoon series created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, beginning with Puss Gets the Boot, released February 10, 1940 with the cat still called Jasper and the mouse unnamed. Hanna and Barbera directed 114 shorts for MGM through 1958 and won seven Academy Awards for the series, which continued under Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones in the 1960s, overtook Looney Tunes as the highest-grossing animated short series of its day and now belongs to Warner Bros., which licenses the pair for merchandise.
