Family Matters

William Bickley and Michael Warren created this ABC sitcom, a spin-off of Perfect Strangers, following the Winslow family, a middle-class Black household in Chicago headed by police sergeant Carl Winslow. (Wikipedia) Reginald VelJohnson stars as Carl opposite Jo Marie Payton as his wife Harriette and Kellie Shanygne Williams as their daughter Laura, with Jaleel White's next-door neighbor Steve Urkel, introduced midway through the first season as a one-off guest, growing into the show's breakout character. The series ran 215 episodes across nine seasons, airing on ABC from September 22, 1989, before moving to CBS for its final season through July 17, 1998.
