Azur Lane (Chinese: 碧蓝航线) is the side-scrolling shoot 'em up, base-building, and role-playing gacha game developed by Chinese studios Shanghai Manjuu and Xiamen Yongshi, first released for iOS and Android in China on May 25, 2017, in Japan that September, and worldwide in English on May 20, 2019, published by Yostar outside mainland China. Set in an alternate history where Earth's oceans come under attack by a mysterious force called the Sirens, players command fleets of "shipgirls," moe anthropomorphized personifications of WWII-era warships drawn primarily from the Eagle Union (United States), Royal Navy (Britain), Sakura Empire (Japan), and Ironblood (Germany) navies, organizing them into squads for side-scrolling combat while also managing a dormitory and social simulation layer. The game has spawned manga, novelizations, a PlayStation 4 and Switch spin-off called Azur Lane: Crosswave, and a television anime produced by Bibury Animation Studios that aired from October 2019 to March 2020.
