Medarot (Medabots) franchise logo.

Medarot (exported as Medabots), created by Natsume for publisher Imagineer, launched in Japan in November 1997 with the paired Game Boy titles Medarot: Kabuto Version and Medarot: Kuwagata Version. Players customize robotic "Medarots," built from head, left-arm, right-arm, and leg parts around a personality-defining Medal, and pit them against rivals in turn-based combat. The line's two version-mascot robots, the beetle-type Metabee and stag-beetle-type Rokusho, anchor a media franchise that grew through 1999's Medarot 2 and further sequels into a television anime, manga, and card game.
