Oji Hiroi's steampunk media franchise, owned by Sega, began with the tactical role-playing game Sakura Wars for the Sega Saturn in 1996. Set in a fictionalized Taishō-era Tokyo, it follows the all-female Imperial Combat Corps, led by heroine Sakura Shinguji, as they pilot steam-powered spirit armor mecha against demonic threats while also managing a theater troupe.
