Suikoden II (Japanese title Genso Suikoden II) is a role-playing game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo and published by Konami for the PlayStation, released in Japan on 17 December 1998 and in North America on 29 September 1999. The story follows an unnamed silent protagonist, later established across the franchise as Riou, and his childhood best friend Jowy Atreides as war engulfs the City-States of Jowston and the neighboring Kingdom of Highland. Each young man receives half of the Rune of the Beginning, a powerful artifact whose two halves are fated to destroy each other, and the split rune drives the two friends onto opposing sides of the Dunan Unification War even as they try to preserve their bond. Luc, a young, morally complex sorcerer bound to the True Wind Rune, eventually joins the Hero's New State Army as its Magic Unit Captain rather than serving Highland, the allegiance a casual summary of the plot might assume from his role scheming among Highland's court earlier in the story.
