Touhou Project (東方Project) is the long-running bullet-hell shoot-'em-up video game series created by independent Japanese dōjin developer Team Shanghai Alice, the solo project of Jun'ya "ZUN" Ōta, who has independently written the programming, art, writing, and music for 20 mainline games and 13 spin-offs since 1997. The series began on the Japanese PC-98 computer with Highly Responsive to Prayers in August 1997, moved to Microsoft Windows with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil in 2002, and is set in Gensokyo, a fantasy realm sealed from the outside world and populated by humans and yōkai personified as young women, where shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei and magician Marisa Kirisame investigate the supernatural "incidents" that drive most games' plots.
