The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 5402BA is the yellow gold "Jumbo," launched in 1977 as the first precious-metal Royal Oak, five years after the steel 5402ST. Everything structural carries across: the 39 mm monocoque case, the octagonal bezel on eight hexagonal screws, the Petite Tapisserie dial, the integrated bracelet and the ultra-thin automatic calibre 2121. Only the metal changes, and with it the argument: in steel the Royal Oak provoked about what a sports watch could cost; in gold it simply looked the price it was. Audemars Piguet's archive records 736 examples sold between 1977 and 1990, against 4,288 of the steel 5402ST. (AP Chronicles, Monochrome) Dials vary: grey and champagne both appear, a few gem-set. The example pictured is a grey-dial 5402BA. (SwissWatchExpo)
