The Cartier Tonneau takes its name from the French word for barrel, describing the curved, elongated rectangular case Cartier patented in 1906 as one of the maison's earliest breaks from the round pocket-watch silhouette. Beyond the standard single-dial dress execution, Cartier has periodically produced a dual-time Tonneau carrying two independent dials side by side under one crystal, each set and wound from its own cabochon-topped crown, most recognizably in the 1990s Cartier Paris "CPCP" era and again in the modern Cartier Privé Tonneau Skeleton.
