The DEVON Works Tread 1 is an electromechanical watch from Devon Works of California, launched in 2010 and built around a display unlike any other. In place of hands or a screen, the time appears on interwoven belts of fibreglass-reinforced nylon just two thousandths of an inch thick, which travel across an anodised indicator plate so the hours, minutes and seconds show as red numerals. Four micro-stepping motors drive the belts; an onboard microprocessor governs them against a temperature-compensated crystal and an optical system that continuously verifies belt position; and a rechargeable lithium-polymer cell runs the whole assembly for about two weeks between inductive charges. It took a Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève nomination in 2010. (About Timepieces)
