The Garmin Instinct is a rugged outdoor GPS watch introduced in October 2018 as a tougher, plainer and lower-cost alternative to the fenix line, at $299. Built to the MIL-STD-810G standard for thermal, shock and water resistance and rated to 100 metres, its fibre-reinforced polymer case and monochrome transflective display (with a small round sub-window set into the main screen) give it a deliberately utilitarian, G-Shock-like look. It fixes position from GPS, GLONASS and Galileo satellites and adds a three-axis compass, barometric altimeter and wrist heart-rate sensor. Battery life runs to about 14 days in smartwatch mode. The stripped-down monochrome display and button controls keep it simpler and cheaper than Garmin's colour-screen watches. (DC Rainmaker)
