Nurse Lapel Watch
More actions
An unidentified nurse's lapel watch worn by Helen Mirren as Hobson in Arthur (2011). The lapel or fob watch survives in professional use because on a ward a wristwatch is an infection-control problem: NHS guidance tells clinical staff to wear nothing on the wrists, wrist-watch included, during direct patient care (NHS England; AACE). Pinning it to the chest solves that, and the design signature follows from where it hangs: the dial is printed upside down, twelve at the bottom, so it reads correctly when the wearer tips it toward the eye. Hobson is Arthur Bach's lifelong nanny, not a nurse, so the watch is costume work. The frame shows a small round pale-dialled watch on a short chain from a bar pin, and resolves no name.
