The Rolex Explorer 14270 succeeded the 26-year-old reference 1016 in 1989, a redesign the trade press called surprising given how little the Explorer's formula had changed since 1963. It kept the 36 mm Oyster case, Mercedes hands and black dial with luminous 3, 6 and 9 Arabic numerals, but replaced the acrylic crystal with sapphire, moved to the higher-beat automatic Caliber 3000, and rebuilt the luminous markers with gold surrounds and tritium fill in place of the 1016's plainer printed lume. Rolex kept the 14270 in production until 2001, when the 114270 took over with the calibre 3130; the earlier reference's tool-watch dial still draws a following distinct from the 1016's pricier vintage cachet.
