The Rolex GMT-Master 6542 is the first GMT-Master, developed in the mid-1950s with Pan American World Airways so its crews could track home and destination time across the new intercontinental jet routes: a fourth 24-hour hand read against a rotating two-color bezel, red for day hours and blue for night. The 6542 is instantly separable from every later GMT: a 38 mm case with no crown guards and a fragile Bakelite bezel insert with luminous numerals, recalled over its radium content and replaced by aluminum before the reference gave way to the 1675 in 1959. Collectors also call it the "Pussy Galore," after Honor Blackman's pilot in Goldfinger (1964), a nickname that persists in auction catalogs. (Wind Vintage; Sotheby's via Artsy)
