The Seiko 62MAS is the automatic dive watch Seiko launched in 1965, the first diver made in Japan. Collectors take the name from the first two digits of the reference with "MA" for automatic and "S" for self-dater. The small-crown 6217-8000 was made for about two months in the spring of 1965 before the 6217-8001 replaced it with a larger crown that a gloved hand could grip. Both share a 37 mm steel case without crown guards, rated to 150 metres, and the 17-jewel calibre 6217 beating at 18,000 vibrations an hour. Japan's 8th Antarctic wintering team was issued the watch in 1966. The pictured example is a 1967 6217-8001. (Craft + Tailored)
