The W.W.W. ("Watch, Wristlet, Waterproof") is a specification the British War Office issued in 1943, designated R.S./Prov/437A, for a general-service wristwatch: a waterproof case suitable for tropical conditions, luminous hands and hour markers, a black dial, and a non-magnetic lever movement with at least 15 jewels. Twelve manufacturers supplied watches to the spec, Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor, and Vertex, a group collectors later nicknamed the "Dirty Dozen." (Wikipedia) Since all twelve built to the same dial layout and case requirements, a screen-worn example is generally identifiable only to the standard itself unless the dial signature is legible.
