WWI Trench Watch
More actions
An unidentified wire-lug wristwatch of First World War pattern, worn by Brie Larson as Elizabeth Zott in Lessons in Chemistry (2023). The first episode's overhead shot shows a small polished round case, a wire lug at twelve, a white dial with painted Arabic numerals, small seconds at six, and a slim dark strap. The format's genealogy is not the one usually told: nobody sawed the bows off pocket watches, purpose-made wire-lug wristwatches had sold since about 1900, and the wartime answer was a savonnette movement dropped into an open-face case. What defined a trench watch was a radium dial and, from late 1915, an unbreakable celluloid crystal. (Vintage Watch Straps) No maker is legible, and the series is set in the 1950s.
