A CWC stopwatch is not a wristwatch. Alongside the wrist watches it supplied the British forces from 1972, Cabot Watch Company held Ministry of Defence contracts for hand-held timers, catalogued under 6645-99 stock numbers: 6645 being the NATO code for time-measuring instruments and 99 the United Kingdom. They came in distinct specifications, from a fifth-second timer to an ASDIC sonar timer whose six-second sweep converted echo delay into range. The movements were Heuer's. (CWC Addict)

The example photographed is the fifth-second pattern, its white dial carrying the broad arrow and the oval CWC mark. Military work was never the whole market: hundreds went to BBC and ITV newsrooms, where a mechanical timer was standard kit, which is why a professional holds one rather than wears it. (CWC)
