An Elgin steel trench watch is a small, hand-wound wristwatch from the company's First World War-era production. The Smithsonian dates an Elgin wristwatch with a protective shrapnel guard to 1917, when wristwatches became common military equipment. Surviving Elgins vary in round, cushion and tonneau cases without a single reference distinguishing the type. Michael B.
