The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classique is a clean, mid-size version of the watch Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced in 1931 for a purely practical reason: British army polo players in India kept smashing their crystals, so the case was built to slide in its cradle and flip face-down, presenting a solid metal back to the mallet. That reversing case became one of the defining Art Deco watch designs — a rectangle with three horizontal grooves top and bottom — and the Classique keeps it plain, a legible dress watch with no complication, usually hand-wound. The blank steel or gold reverse is traditionally left for an engraving, which is part of the watch's sentiment. It is heritage worn quietly, which suits the period register of Mad Men.
