Ian Holm (1931–2020) was an English actor, a longtime Royal Shakespeare Company player before his screen career, and an Academy Award nominee for Chariots of Fire (1981). He is best known to modern audiences as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and as the android Ash in Ridley Scott's Alien (1979); he was knighted in 1998.
