Jim Carter (born 1948) is an English actor best known as the butler Mr Carson in Downton Abbey (2010-2015), a role that earned him four Primetime Emmy nominations and that he reprised in the three feature films; his other credits include Brassed Off, Shakespeare in Love, The Golden Compass and, opposite his wife Imelda Staunton, the BBC's Cranford.
