Julian Fellowes's historical drama follows the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants at a Yorkshire country house from the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 to the mid-1920s, with Hugh Bonneville as Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess, Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary, Dan Stevens as the heir Matthew Crawley, Jim Carter as the butler Mr Carson and Brendan Coyle as the valet John Bates. ITV first broadcast it on 26 September 2010 and PBS carried it in the United States under Masterpiece; it ran fifty-two episodes across six series, including five Christmas specials, and was followed by three feature films. Waltham watch

Worn by Jim Carter as Charles Carson. Bonhams' "Downton Abbey: The Auction" (London, New Bond Street, 16 September 2025) sold the butler's pocket watch as lot 35, "Jim Carter (as Mr Carson): Silver pocket watch, Various Seasons, and Episodes": "The case with marks for 'Dennison Watch Case Co, Birmingham, 1919', the dial marked 'Waltham/U.S.A', and engraved motif to the reverse, with associated detachable silver chain, diameter 5cm". The 1919 Birmingham date letter falls inside the drama's 1912 to 1926 span but after the pre-war and wartime settings of the first two series. Sold for £6,400 with premium. (Bonhams)
