Maximilian Schell was a Swiss actor, director, and filmmaker of Austrian origin, among the most prominent German-speaking screen actors of his generation. Born in Vienna and raised in Zurich after his family fled the 1938 annexation, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor as a defense lawyer in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and earned further Oscar nominations for The Man in the Glass Booth and Julia.
