Peter Falk (16 September 1927 – 23 June 2011) was an American actor, Oscar-nominated for Murder, Inc. (1960) and Pocketful of Miracles (1961) and a regular in John Cassavetes's independent films, whose raincoat, cigar and glass eye as Lieutenant Columbo made him one of television's most recognisable detectives across 69 episodes of Columbo from 1968 to 2003, four Emmys and a Golden Globe.
