Rudolph Valentino (1895-1926) was an Italian-American actor and the era's leading matinee idol, whose smoldering "Latin Lover" roles in The Sheik (1921) and Blood and Sand (1922) made him one of silent Hollywood's biggest stars. He died suddenly of peritonitis at 31, weeks after the release of his final film, The Son of the Sheik, a death that drew tens of thousands of mourners to his New York funeral. (Wikipedia)
