Yves Montand (1921-1991) was an Italian-born French singer and actor who began as a music-hall performer under Édith Piaf's mentorship and became a major screen presence in The Wages of Fear, Costa-Gavras's Z and État de siège, and, late in life, as César in Claude Berri's Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources.
