(IMDb) Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino for Nippon Sunrise and credited to the studio pen name Hajime Yatate, the 43-episode series ran on Nagoya TV and the TV Asahi network from 7 April 1979 to 26 January 1980. Set in the year Universal Century 0079, it follows fifteen-year-old civilian Amuro Ray, who falls into the cockpit of the Federation's prototype RX-78-2 Gundam and is drawn into a war against the masked Zeon ace Char Aznable, treating mechanised combat as human tragedy rather than spectacle.
