Space Brothers and the Speedmaster
More actions
Eddie holds out his watch and asks Mutta to take it. The original manga page describes a loan, and the official character account preserves the condition: Mutta must return it after reaching Earth. The watch is a commander’s badge, passed with an expectation that they will meet again.
Begin identifies the volume 33 watch in Space Brothers as an Omega Speedmaster Professional. Its exact production reference remains open.
A watch with flight history
Eddie connects the watch to the type worn by Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11. That comparison belongs to the dialogue; it does not mean the fictional watch is Aldrin’s own historical object.
NASA qualified the Speedmaster for crewed missions in 1965, as documented in Omega’s archive. The Smithsonian holds the example issued to James Lovell for Gemini 7 that December.
Which Speedmaster?
The handover page shows a dark dial, three subsidiary registers and a dark strap. Those details fit the Speedmaster identification, but the small drawing does not reveal a movement or caseback.
Begin’s feature includes watches readers could find at retail, with current alternatives used where older models are no longer sold. The reference beside a retail photograph therefore describes the photographed product. It may be a later replacement for the watch the feature discusses.
The model is identifiable as a Speedmaster Professional; its production generation remains unresolved.
