What Watch Does Light Yagami Wear in Death Note?
More actions
The watch most closely associated with Light Yagami in Death Note is a dark-dial chronograph on a metal bracelet. It resembles an Omega Speedmaster Professional, although the animation does not establish an exact Omega reference. Its most consequential feature belongs to the story: Light can conceal a fragment of the Death Note inside it.
The Speedmaster comparison
The anime frame gives the watch a round case, pale hands, subsidiary dials and closely spaced perimeter markings. Those features support the broad Speedmaster comparison. The metal bracelet is drawn in detail, though the reference and movement remain unresolved.
The Mark II also appears in accounts of Light’s watch. Hypebeast’s report on the licensed SuperGroupies watch specifically makes that comparison to the manga. Importing it into the anime as a settled identification would collapse two different drawings into one watch. The fictional paper compartment offers no clue to the Omega reference.
The other watch on Light’s wrist
Light’s earlier watch has a much plainer layout. Twelve Arabic hour numerals occupy its black outer ring, surrounding a dark dial with a broad broken-circle motif. There are no chronograph registers. A small crown protrudes at three o’clock, and broad metal links connect the round case to the bracelet.
The maker’s name is unreadable; “Light’s Omega” cannot usefully describe both watches.
A real sliding caseback
The SuperGroupies Death Note Model takes the concealment idea into merchandise. SuperGroupies describes a watch inspired by Light’s, with a black dial and bezel, steel bracelet, and a caseback that pulls out. The series logo and Ryuk’s silhouette decorate the back; a TIME MODULE VD55 quartz movement supplies the timekeeping.
The sliding back reproduces Light’s concealment trick alongside the dark chronograph design. It belongs to the later licensed product, separate from both watches drawn in the anime.
