Andrew Vachss's fifth Burke novel takes his unlicensed New York investigator to Indiana at the call of Virgil, who once went down for manslaughter: the teenager Lloyd, who lives with Virgil's family, has been arrested as the sniper shooting kids in parked cars. Burke works the Merrillville area under a paper identity, a solid citizen named Mitchell Sloane, and dresses the part. (Open Library)

- Before calling on a real estate manager as Mitchell Sloane, front man for a consortium with cash, Burke showers, shaves and puts on the costume: a dove-gray silk-and-worsted suit Michelle made him buy, white silk shirt, plain dark tie, black Bally slip-ons, a thin gray Concord with tiny gold dots on the band and a black star sapphire ring. Thin quartz dress watches were Concord's signature in the 1980s. The maker is named; the model is not.
