Different Seasons (1982)
More actions

Stephen King's collection of four novellas was published by the Viking Press in 1982, each novella under a season's heading: Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (Hope Springs Eternal), Apt Pupil (Summer of Corruption), The Body (Fall from Innocence) and The Breathing Method (A Winter's Tale). In Apt Pupil, thirteen-year-old Todd Bowden of Santo Donato has worked out that the old man calling himself Arthur Denker is a Nazi war criminal in hiding; The Body is Gordie Lachance's memory of the summer he and three other Castle Rock boys walked the railroad tracks to see a dead boy's body. Watches
- Timex (unidentified model)
- In Apt Pupil, on a summer morning, Todd rings the bell of the man calling himself Arthur Denker and, hearing no footsteps, looks at his Timex, one of the premiums he earned selling personalized greeting cards: twelve past ten. He then leans on the bell and times himself by the watch's sweep second hand, seventy-one seconds, until slippers shuffle to the door. The watch belongs to the punctual, prize-collecting boy the opening pages build before the door opens. The maker is named; the model is not.

- Timex (unidentified model)
- In The Body, the four boys climb the cinder embankment to the Great Southern and Western Maine tracks at the start of their walk, shirts tied round their waists. Gordie, the narrator, is the only one with a watch, a cheap Timex he got as a premium for selling Cloverine Brand Salve the year before, and its hands stand at straight up noon. He reads it again later that day, at a quarter past two (p. 349) and after five (p. 390). Like Todd's, it is a sales-premium Timex, a small rhyme between two novellas of the same book. The maker is named; the model is not.
