- Doyle lists a Waterbury watch among the small personal effects collected from the dead trooper No. 410 of the New South Wales Mounted Infantry during wartime service. The watch lies dial-up near the body and has stopped at one in the morning. Doyle collects it with the trooper's pen, knife, handkerchief and purse before carrying the body to the road for burial. The timekeeper is part of the account's reconstruction of a death, rather than a surviving patient's hospital belongings. (Project Gutenberg source text)
