NK3 (2017)

From IMWDb
NK3

Michael Tolkin's 2017 novel imagines Los Angeles after NK3, a weaponized microbe that erases human memory, where a new aristocracy walls itself into a compound and the objects of the old world are sorted by people who no longer know what they were for. (Open Library)

Watches

IWC Portugieser Chronograph
A speaker pulls a watch from his pocket and identifies it as an IWC Portugieser Chronograph, worth about ten thousand dollars at least, part of a lesson in pricing the watches of the dead. The text names the model only. No wearer applies; the watches are salvage being appraised.
Rolex Daytona
In the same appraisal a Rolex Daytona is pointed out and priced at twenty thousand dollars, with the note that some watches are worth far more. The speaker adds that the IWC was worn by rich men who wanted to seem too cool for a Rolex. No wearer applies; the watch is salvage.
