The Rolex Daytona is Rolex's chronograph, introduced in 1963 as a hand-wound racing watch with a tachymeter scale on the bezel for reading average speed. The early references were around 37 mm; in 1988 the Daytona grew to the 40 mm case it has kept since and gained an automatic movement, the Zenith-based calibre 4030, which Rolex replaced in 2000 with its own column-wheel calibre 4130 (recognisable by the hour counter at nine o'clock). Reference 116500LN, launched in 2016, brought the first Cerachrom ceramic bezel to the steel Daytona, with a black or white dial. Long-running demand well beyond supply has made the steel Daytona one of the most sought-after production watches of its era. (Fratello)
