Record

Record was a Swiss watchmaker founded in 1903 in Tramelan, canton of Bern, originally to produce a triangular "sector" pocket watch patented by Italian watchmaker Giovanni Sgherlino. The company merged into Record Dreadnought Watch Co. S.A. in 1916 and moved its headquarters to Geneva in 1924, retaining production sites in Tramelan, La Chaux-de-Fonds, and Les Pommerats. Record is best known for supplying one of the twelve manufacturers behind Britain's Ministry of Defence "Dirty Dozen" military watches of 1944-1945, and for later "W.W.W." (Watch, Wrist, Waterproof) pattern field watches supplied to several Commonwealth-linked militaries into the 1960s. Longines acquired a majority stake in 1961 to expand its own production capacity, and folded Record's commercial operations into its own in 1973. (Time2Tell)
