Van Cleef & Arpels approached watches as jewelry with a purpose: the 1935 Cadenas bracelet-watch turned its dial toward the wrist so a woman could check the time without seeming to, honoring an era's etiquette against consulting a watch openly. That instinct resurfaced in 2006's Poetic Complications line, whose automatons, including the Midnight Planétarium's orbiting-planet module engineered with watchmaker Christiaan van der Klaauw, favor storytelling over legibility.
