Carlito's Way

Brian De Palma's crime drama, adapted from Edwin Torres's novels. Released on a technicality in 1975 after five years inside, Carlito Brigante, a Puerto Rican heroin dealer whose old neighbourhood will not let him retire, resolves to go straight, earn a stake running a nightclub, and get out to the Caribbean with the dancer he loves. The man who keeps pulling him back is his lawyer and closest friend, Dave Kleinfeld, whose own habits are corroding faster than Carlito's resolve. Worn by Sean Penn as Dave Kleinfeld. Montres de Luxe identifies Kleinfeld's watch as a 36 mm Rolex Day-Date in yellow gold, without narrowing it to a reference, which the period would not make easy: the gold 36 mm President ran through several closely related references across the 1970s and 1980s. The model is doing character work. Rolex builds the Day-Date only in gold or platinum, and it is the one watch in Carlito's orbit that announces legitimate money, worn by the one man in it whose money is legitimate on paper and whose conduct is not.
