Steven Spielberg's 1977 science-fiction film follows Indiana power-company lineman Roy Neary, played by Richard Dreyfuss, whose encounter with a UFO on a Muncie road leaves him compelled to sculpt the shape of Devils Tower, with Melinda Dillon as Jillian Guiler, Teri Garr as Ronnie Neary and François Truffaut as the French scientist Claude Lacombe. Worn by Richard Dreyfuss as Roy Neary. Propstore's Los Angeles Spring 2025 live auction (March 2025, lot 72) sold Roy Neary's screen-used watch, worn "throughout the film, including as he experienced an extraterrestrial encounter while trying to help restore the power in Muncie, Indiana", from a consignor who worked on the film and with a letter of authenticity promised: "This metal Timeband T231 is an early style of men's digital wristwatch first released by Timeband in the mid-1970s. It features a black leather wristband and red and black acrylic face." Timeband was Fairchild Semiconductor's LED watch brand, and a period LED display lights only while a button is pressed, so the watch reads as a dark red panel on Neary's wrist in most shots; the reference is established by the lot essay, since no 1977 frame could resolve it.
