The Timeband T231 is a red-LED digital wristwatch from Timeband, the brand under which Fairchild Semiconductor sold LED and LCD watches when American chip makers crowded into the mid-1970s digital-watch boom; Fairchild built its own modules, with large displays on ceramic substrates and a flat lens over the digits, and supplied them to private labels too. (Crazywatches) Like every LED watch of the period, its display stays dark until a button is pressed, which is why the metal-cased T231 on Richard Dreyfuss's wrist in Close Encounters of the Third Kind reads as a blank red panel through most of the film; Propstore, selling that screen-used example in 2025, dates the model to "the mid-1970s" and describes its black leather strap and red-and-black acrylic face.
