Clint Eastwood's Cold War thriller for Warner Bros., his eighth film as director, adapted from Craig Thomas's espionage novel. Mitchell Gant, a retired United States Air Force pilot still carrying the after-effects of Vietnam, is put into the Soviet Union to steal the MiG-31 Firefox, a prototype fighter that radar cannot see, and the mission turns entirely on whether he can fly it back out. Eastwood stars as well as directs, with Freddie Jones, Warren Clarke, Kenneth Colley and Nigel Hawthorne. (IMDb)

Worn by Clint Eastwood as Major Mitchell Gant. Montres de Luxe describes the watch on Eastwood's wrist as a Rolex GMT-Master with a chocolate dial in gold and steel on a Jubilee bracelet, the warm two-tone execution collectors nicknamed the root beer, and counts two close-ups on it over the course of the film. No reference accompanies that description, and the gold-and-steel GMT-Master ran across more than one reference in the period, so the model is settled and the variant is not. The complication is on the nose for the plot: the fourth 24-hour hand read against a rotating bezel gives a second time zone at a glance, which is the whole problem facing a pilot flying a stolen aircraft west across Soviet airspace on a fuel clock.
