Richard Walker, an American surgeon in Paris for a medical conference with his wife Sondra, comes out of the shower to find her gone from their hotel room and no one willing to treat it as urgent. His search drags him across the rooftops and through the city's drug bars into a smuggling operation built around a triggering component for a nuclear weapon, carried in a suitcase swapped at the airport.
