A group of veteran British NCOs at a King's African Rifles base in a newly independent African state is caught up in a coup, and the martinet Regimental Sergeant Major Lauderdale holds the sergeants' mess while protecting the wounded African commanding officer in his care. (IMDb) Directed by John Guillermin from Robert Holles's 1962 novel The Siege of Battersea, the 20th Century Fox drama was shot at Pinewood Studios and released in 1964. Richard Attenborough plays Lauderdale, a performance that won him the BAFTA for Best British Actor, with Jack Hawkins as Colonel Deal, Flora Robson as the visiting Labour MP Miss Barker-Wise, Mia Farrow as United Nations secretary Karen Eriksson and John Leyton as Private Wilkes. Worn by Richard Attenborough as Regimental Sergeant Major Lauderdale. Lauderdale wears an Omega Speedmaster, seven years after the model's 1957 launch and among the earliest sightings of the chronograph in a feature film. Worn & Wound's Watches on the Screen column, surveying the Speedmaster on screen, reports that "During the film he consults his Omega Speedmaster to check the time"; it names no reference, and a 1964 watch predates the Professional dial text, so no sub-model is confirmed.
