A wisecracking Los Angeles private eye is hired to find a missing oil tycoon, uncovering blackmail, kidnapping, and betrayal among the tycoon's dysfunctional family. (Wikipedia) Directed by Jack Smight and adapted by William Goldman from Ross Macdonald's novel The Moving Target, the film stars Paul Newman as Lew Harper; it was released by Warner Bros. in February 1966 and spawned a 1975 sequel, The Drowning Pool.
