Knock Off

Tsui Hark's action thriller, set in Hong Kong on the eve of the 1997 handover. Marcus Ray, a garment executive whose fortune was built on counterfeit jeans, discovers that his own knock-off supply chain is carrying something worse than fake denim: miniature explosives sewn into mass-manufactured goods bound for the United States, and no way of telling which of the people around him is running it. Rolex Daytona

Worn by Jean-Claude Van Damme as Marcus Ray. Montres de Luxe identifies Marcus Ray's watch as a steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with a white dial, a description that fixes the metal and the dial colour without naming a reference; in 1998 a steel Daytona meant the 40 mm automatic generation built on the Zenith-based movement, which Rolex replaced with its own calibre two years later. There is a joke buried in the casting of the prop, since a film whose title, plot, and hero's livelihood all turn on the difference between the genuine article and the copy puts one of the watch trade's most heavily counterfeited chronographs on his wrist.
