Le Paltoquet is Michel Deville's 1986 mystery, adapted from Franz-Rudolph Falk's novel On a tué pendant l'escale and shot entirely on a single studio bar set. None of the characters is given a proper name; they are known only by their trade or station. Michel Piccoli plays the title character, the bar's downtrodden barman, opposite Jeanne Moreau as the tenancière and Fanny Ardant as the mysterious Mlle Lotte. Every evening, a doctor (Richard Bohringer), a journalist (Daniel Auteuil), a merchant (Philippe Léotard) and a professor (Claude Piéplu) gather to play cards, until Jean Yanne's police commissioner arrives investigating a murder on the nearby quay.
