Mike Figgis's drama, adapted from John O'Brien's semi-autobiographical novel and scored by the director himself. Ben Sanderson, a Hollywood screenwriter who has already drunk away his career and his family, is paid off by the studio, burns what he owns and moves to Las Vegas intending to drink himself to death; in a hotel near the bars that never close he meets Sera, a prostitute who takes him in on the condition that neither will ask the other to change. Worn by Nicolas Cage as Ben Sanderson. Montres de Luxe identifies Ben's watch as a steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona and reports him selling what it calls his "1993 Rolex" for $500 as the severance money runs out, which puts a chronograph from the Zenith-calibre generation then in production on his wrist rather than a hand-wound one. The film treats the moment as a landmark rather than a detail: Figgis titled the eleventh cue of his own soundtrack "Ben Pawns His Rolex / Sera Talks to Her Shrink", so the sale is fixed in the credits as well as the plot.
