Fritz Lang's German expressionist science-fiction epic. In a towering future city split between a leisured elite above ground and workers toiling in the machine levels below, the city master's son falls for a working-class prophet and is drawn into the unrest her preaching stirs, while an inventor's robot double of her is set loose to sow chaos instead. (IMDb) Written by Thea von Harbou from her own novel, the UFA production stars Gustav Fröhlich as Freder Fredersen, Alfred Abel as his father, city master Joh Fredersen, Brigitte Helm as Maria, and Rudolf Klein-Rogge as the inventor Rotwang; it premiered in Berlin on 10 January 1927.
